Since its release, the PDX Carpet fabric has sparked a range of creative projects celebrating travel and sewing. Quilters have embraced the design for everything from tote bags to home décor, but some of the most exciting pieces have come from local quilting guilds like the Portland Modern Quilt Guild (PMQG) and the Eugene Modern Quilt Guild (EMQG).
Both guilds recently received donations of PDX Carpet fabric, giving members the chance to create something unique. For example, EMQG member Sarah Lewenberg used the fabric to craft a stunning mobile featuring a Calavera and a hat. Inspired by dreams of Oaxaca for Día de los Muertos, Sarah suspended the pieces from the PDX fabric, turning travel inspiration into an artful display.
Kishanna Bousselaira of PMQG also drew on travel for her project, using the fabric to sew a Noodlehead Buckhorn Backpack. Her version included a quilted carrier at the bottom, accented with hot pink strapping, blending functionality and flair to capture the spirit of adventure.
PMQG member Alisa Sheldon’s PDX Carpet quilted sleep mask was inspired by a Suzy Quilts blog post she read just before a trip. Drawing from the free tutorial by Carly Prentice of Sun Stitched Studio, Alisa used scrap fabric and two layers of batting to quickly craft a mask designed to block out light.
These are just a few examples of how quilters are turning the PDX Carpet fabric into personal expressions of travel. Whether it’s a tote for a weekend getaway or a backpack for a global adventure, the fabric has become a beloved favorite in the quilting community.
