Boersma’s Marks 90 years in Business

On April 1, 1935, in Chicago, Illinois, a small vacuum shop was opened by Dirk and Harriet Boersma (aka Mom and Dad), marking the beginning of an amazing story. They moved their growing business across the country, eventually landing in McMinnville, Oregon, in 1962.

Their son Jack grew up in the business and became the head repairman at 12 years of age. On April 1, 1975, after 40 years in business (to the day), Jack became the proud owner of Boersma’s at the ripe old age of 18. Within a year of the purchase, Jack revamped the business adding a complete fabric and notions department to the already extensive sewing and vacuum areas.

Jack and his wife Michelle have grown and evolved Boersma’s to one of the largest fabric and notions stores on the West Coast. Our entire staff has been monumental in our success as well. One of the positive side effects of being in business for so long is the vast accumulation of unique, antique machines that are displayed throughout the 103-year-old 20,000 sq. ft. building that used to house a Montgomery Ward store.
